Mobile machines and vehicles often work with changing attachments, tools, or operators. To ensure the machine always knows which component is currently in use, RFID can automate identification directly on the vehicle.
Whether it's a municipal vehicle, agricultural machine, construction equipment, or industrial truck: RFID creates a clear link between the machine, attachment, and operator. Manual input is reduced, and relevant information can be transferred directly to the machine control system.
Automatically identify attachments
The principle is simple: attachments, tools, or containers are equipped with an RFID transponder . An RFID reader permanently installed on the machine automatically detects the transponder as soon as it is within the defined reading range.
For a municipal vehicle, for example, it can detect whether a mower, spreader, sweeper, or snow blade is currently attached. The unique ID is then transmitted via an industrial interface such as CANopen or SAE J1939 transmitted to the machine control system.
Based on this information, the control system can, for example, select the appropriate operating mode, enable functions, or assign operating data to the respective attachment. This eliminates the need for manual selection by the operator.
Clearly assign operating data
RFID identification can also be combined with data from the machine control system or a telematics system. This makes it possible to track which attachment was used, when, and for how long.
This enables usage-based maintenance planning. Instead of setting maintenance intervals solely based on the age of a device, actual operating hours or frequency of use can be taken into account. As a result, maintenance and inspections can be planned more effectively.
Authorize operators via RFID
RFID is not only suitable for identifying attachments. Employees can also identify themselves directly at a machine using an RFID card or a key fob .
The machine control system can then verify whether the individual is authorized to operate the machine or specific functions. Different authorization levels can also be implemented.
For example, operating a machine may be generally permitted, while certain attachments or operating modes are restricted to appropriately trained employees.
Integrating RFID directly into the machine
For automatic identification, iDTRONIC offers compact MPR series RFID readers. Depending on the application, HF and UHF versions are available, as well as industrial interfaces and protocols such as CANopen, SAE J1939, RS232, RS485, Ethernet, or Modbus.
The readers can be installed directly on machines and vehicles. Rugged designs with IP67-rated housings, integrated antennas, and industrial M12 connectors are also suitable for demanding operating conditions involving dust, moisture, or temperature fluctuations.
If longer read ranges or multiple detection points are required, high-performance UHF readers from the RFline series can be used.
Retrofitting existing machines with RFID
Existing machines and vehicle fleets can also be upgraded with RFID technology. The key is to tailor the readers, transponders, and installation positions to the specific application.
Factors considered include available installation space, required reading distance, existing interfaces, power supply, and environmental conditions. For metallic attachments, for example, specially designed on-metal transponders are used.
Greater transparency in fleet management
Automatic RFID identification creates a clear digital link between the machine, the attachment, and the operator. Information is captured exactly where it originates and can be processed further without any additional manual input.
In this way, RFID supports, among other things, automatic attachment recognition, the allocation of operating hours, needs-based maintenance planning, and the management of operator permissions.
iDTRONIC provides support in selecting the appropriate RFID technology, positioning readers and transponders, and integrating them technically into existing machine control systems.
