Speed gates: Why they are ideal for modern access control

Modern entrance areas must facilitate a fast flow of people while simultaneously preventing unauthorized access. A classic turnstile performs this task reliably, but often looks overly technical or bulky in representative interior spaces. Speed gates , on the other hand, combine controlled access with high speed, intelligent sensor technology, and modern design.

As motorized pedestrian gates, they are particularly suitable for gyms, companies, hotels, health centers, and public facilities.

What is a speed gate?

A Speedgate is an automatic lane system for access control. Once identification is successful, the electric drive opens the integrated barrier wings to clear the passage. Authentication can be performed via RFID, NFC, QR code, or facial recognition.

Unlike a mechanical turnstile, the speedgate operates using sensor-based controls. The sensors monitor the passage and ensure reliable individual access. As a result, the security gate combines controlled entry with a high level of user convenience.

A speedgate can be used individually or as part of a larger turnstile system. When multiple lanes are required, different lanes can be designated for members, employees, visitors, or accessible entry.

Advantages over a classic turnstile

A conventional turnstile is primarily suitable for functional entrance areas. Speedgates are designed for applications where speed, comfort, and aesthetics are just as important as security.

After successful authentication, the motorized drive opens automatically. Users do not need to speedgate manually push the barrier. This ensures a smooth flow and reduces wait times during peak hours.

Transparent barrier wings and a slim frame give the entrance area an open and modern look. Nevertheless, access remains controlled: only individuals with valid authorization are granted entry.

Ideal for modern gyms

Especially in Gyms need access systems that can process large numbers of members quickly and reliably during peak hours. By the end of 2025, 12.36 million people in Germany were members of one of the 9,647 fitness and health facilities. As the industry grows, so do the demands on automated check-in processes.

Speed gates help gyms manage access without the need for constant manual supervision. Members can identify themselves using methods such as an RFID wristband, membership card, NFC, QR code, or face scan. The motorized drive then opens the passage.

Staff are relieved of entry control duties and can focus more on supporting members. At the same time, the turnstile system prevents multiple people from entering the gym with only one valid authorization.

The BLACK LINE EDITION from iDTRONIC is specifically designed for modern entrance areas:

• Premium black design for modern studios

• Authentication via QR code, RFID, NFC, or face scan

• Capacity of up to 55 people per minute

• Various system lengths for different entrance layouts

Electronic authorization checks alone do not prevent multiple people from walking through an open door together. A turnstile system therefore complements digital access control with physical separation.

Sensors monitor the passage and, depending on the configuration, detect unauthorized movements. If a second person attempts to follow directly behind an authorized user, the system can deny access or trigger an alarm.

This individual access control increases security and reduces the Misuse of membership cards or other access media. A modern speed gate remains more comfortable and visually more open than a classic stainless steel turnstile.

Flexible integration into existing systems

Modern access control should not be limited to a single identification method. Speed gates can be connected with various technologies

RFID cards, key fobs and wristbands

• QR codes for guests and temporary access

Facial recognition for contactless check-ins

Readers and terminals from various manufacturers

The turnstile system can communicate with existing member management or access control systems via standard interfaces. Authorization is verified digitally and then transmitted to the turnstile controller.

This allows for speed gates to be integrated just as easily as larger multi-lane turnstile systems. The access solution can be tailored to visitor volume, the required security level, and your existing system infrastructure.

Incorporating accessible passageways

When planning, at least one sufficiently wide passageway should be included. This facilitates access for wheelchair users as well as people with strollers, walking aids, or large bags.

The required width depends on the building's usage and applicable regulations. A wider gate can be integrated into an existing turnstile system without compromising controlled access.

Conclusion

Speed gates combine the functionality of a turnstile with modern sensor technology, fast opening times, and high-quality design. They enable rapid access, support controlled individual passage, and can be combined with RFID, NFC, QR codes, or face scanning.

Whether you choose a premium black design, stainless steel, or integration into existing turnstile systems, the right version depends on visitor volume, security requirements, available space, and architecture.
