How a proven HF/NFC reader became a custom crane authentication solution

In ports where cranes load containers around the clock, every minute counts—but so does every safety precaution. An Austrian-based provider of port logistics solutions wanted to ensure that employees authenticate before they can even begin operating a crane.
However, the requirements went beyond a standard device. The reader needed to be CANopen-compatible to integrate with existing crane electronics. It also had to blend seamlessly into the overall design, looking like an in-house product rather than a visible third-party component.
From portfolio product to custom solution

The MPR IA HF/NFC Reader from our existing portfolio served as the development base. Building on this, we adapted the device to meet the customer's specific requirements.
The reader's LED behavior was programmed according to customer specifications, and the connector was angled and assigned a custom pinout. Instead of a standard connection, an M12 circular connector is used, and data output is provided via CANopen telegram, exactly as required for integration into the crane's electronics.
The aesthetics were also refined: the device features a custom logo so that it blends unobtrusively into the customer's existing product line. At the same time, cybersecurity measures were implemented, and the housing was designed according to ISO 16750 to reliably withstand voltages between 10 and 32 VDC, which is essential for robust operation in port environments.
In practice, employees identify themselves using an ID card or badge. Communication is encrypted and based on Mifare technology. The reader is installed directly inside the crane operator's cab.
It took about ten months from the initial inquiry to series production. Following an initial consultation and advisory phase, we presented our proposed solution, which was then followed by the actual development and a proof of concept. The numerous custom requirements—ranging from electrical systems and interfaces to the physical design—required several rounds of prototyping before we arrived at the final, production-ready solution.
The benefits for the customer
Badge-based authentication ensures that only authorized personnel can operate a crane. This reduces the risk of improper operation and significantly tightens access control in port operations.
At the same time, shift changes are now much faster. Instead of a manual login, operators simply tap their badge—a detail that makes a noticeable difference when there are multiple driver changes per day. And because the reader is CANopen-compatible and fits seamlessly both visually and technically, it was integrated into the existing system landscape without any friction, as if it had been part of it from the very beginning.

We stay on board even after development is complete. We handle the necessary device certifications and remain the customer's long-term supplier for this product.
